Our gong wall is an amazing feat of engineering. Made up of an amalgamation of multiple gong stands brought to together to hold five metal wonders, the wall itself was a labor of love. Through collecting throughout the year, we were able to procure after research, testing, and repeated listens, the finalists of our search. Whether to attend to difficult memories, create deep sensory field resonance, soften, enliven, or simply hold in a healing well of sound and gentleness, these gongs were carefully selected to represent a number of different emotions and possibilities to provide for sound healing. Each one is its own masterpiece (as most gongs are, because each one is an amazing feat of metallurgy and sculpting.)

We hope you enjoy learning about the gongs we have at Paths to Restoration, and that you come to visit us and experience their resonance and energy at a sound bath soon.

The Five Gongs of Our Wall

24" Wind Gong: Breath

The Wind Gong is perhaps the most immediately recognizable of the traditional gong forms with a flat, unlathed disc of bronze and a raw, unprocessed surface that allows it to speak with remarkable brightness and clarity. Its sound is airy and responsive, rising quickly to a shimmer when struck and moving through a wide range of frequencies as it develops. Its higher-frequency content engages the upper registers of hearing and attention, helping to begin the process of releasing the mind from its ordinary preoccupations. It clears, brightens, and lifts, making it a natural companion for the opening phases of a puja, when the body is still finding its way into the experience.

The 24" size gives it a voice that is present without being overwhelming. It is accessible, inviting, and pleasantly penetrating. It works well with both friction mallets, which draw out its singing upper harmonics, and lighter gong mallets, which produce its characteristic shimmer. It is also an excellent instrument for periodic use throughout a longer session, offering moments of refreshment and lift between the deeper, more sustained work of the larger gongs.

Its contribution to the standing wave field is primarily in the higher frequency ranges, where it helps to define the upper boundary of the acoustic space and gives the body's more subtle energy systems something bright and clear to track.

30" Paiste Platonic Year Gong, Note F:

Cosmic Rhythm

The Paiste Platonic Year Gong is tuned to the mathematical frequency of the Platonic Year, the approximately 25,920-year cycle of the precession of the equinoxes, the slow wobble of the Earth's axis as it traces its cosmic circle through the heavens. This cycle, known to ancient astronomers and cosmologists across many cultures, represents the grandest of the Earth's rhythmic movements, and its corresponding frequency carries a quality of vast, unhurried time.

The note F is associated in many vibrational healing frameworks with the heart (Anahata) and with the processes of integration. This includes the capacity to hold complexity, to absorb experience, and to find coherence within it. The Platonic Year Gong with a note of F speaks to the body's deep rhythms, the ones that operate beneath the threshold of ordinary awareness, and invites a kind of temporal surrender.

In healing work, this gong is well-suited to periods of deep inner processing, particularly around themes of continuity, belonging, and one's relationship to time and cycle. Its sound is rich, round, and sustaining. Friction mallet work on this instrument produces extraordinary sustained tones that seem to hold the room in a kind of suspended hum, while struck work opens it into a full, spreading resonance.

The Paiste Metallurgical Tradition

Paiste is recognized internationally as one of the most rigorous and innovative manufacturers of bronze alloy percussion instruments in the world. Their planet gong line of which both the Platonic Year and the Earth Gong in this collection are part, is made from a proprietary B20 bronze alloy. It is approximately 80% copper and 20% tin, with trace elements introduced to achieve specific acoustic and healing properties.

The significance of this metallurgic composition extends beyond conventional instrument making. Copper and tin, when combined in this ratio and worked through Paiste's hammering, lathing, and tempering processes, produce a metal with a crystalline structure that sustains vibration with exceptional longevity and complexity. The overtone series of a Paiste planet gong is unusually rich and coherent with frequencies that support each other and reinforce the fundamental wave in ways that are perceptible both acoustically and somatically.

Paiste tunes each planet gong to the specific frequency calculated by the Swiss mathematician and scientist Hans Cousto in his work 'The Cosmic Octave,' in which he translated the orbital periods of celestial bodies into audible frequencies through the mathematical principle of octave transposition. Each gong is verified to within fractions of a Hertz of its target frequency, ensuring that the healing intention built into the instrument's design is preserved in the actual sound it produces. It is important to note, however, that the formulation created by Cousto is really to act as a symbolic representation of these massive bodies in our solar system, and not as a scientifically accurate representation of frequency coherence. This is true for all planetary gongs produced by Paiste or other similar gong companies.

The result is an instrument that is not only musically precise but physiologically coherent, becoming a tool that delivers its frequency as a vibrational message to the body's receptivity centers for resonance, hoping to mimic the powerful remembrance of the inherent resonance of the cosmic spheres.

32" Chocolate Drop Gong from Gongs Unlimited: Subconscious Grounding

The Chocolate Drop Gong, named for the distinctive dark, hammered finish achieved through a particular tempering and treatment process, is one of the more unusual and personally expressive instruments in the Gongs Unlimited catalog. Gongs Unlimited, based in the United States, is known for its willingness to work with non-standard forms, alternative alloy treatments, and experimental surface preparations. The Chocolate Drop reflects that spirit.

Its sound is dark, warm, and grounding. Where some gongs speak immediately and openly, the Chocolate Drop tends to unfold slowly, as though its voice is coming from a greater depth. Its lower-mid frequencies are particularly full, and its overtone series carries an earthy, complex quality that feels supportive rather than stimulating.

In healing sessions, this gong is especially valuable for work around grounding, safety, and the kind of deep, pre-verbal comfort that the body associates with being held. It is an excellent choice for participants who carry anxiety or nervous system dysregulation, as its sound tends to encourage settling rather than activation. It is also well-suited to the middle hours of a puja, when the intention is to support the body's deepest rest.

Friction mallet work on the Chocolate Drop produces long, resonant tones that fill the low-mid register of the acoustic space, while a heavier gong mallet can open it into a fuller, more expansive wash. Its contribution to the standing wave is primarily in the lower-mid frequency range, providing a sonic anchor that helps the other gongs' higher frequencies to feel held and supported.

36" Atlantis Gong from Gongs Unlimited: Deep Healing

The Atlantis Gong is among the most distinctive instruments in this collection, both in its composition and in the quality of experience it produces. Created by Gongs Unlimited, it is made using a specialized process that incorporates mineral elements, which include crystalline compounds, blending them into the alloy treatment of the bronze surface. These additions alter the acoustic behavior of the metal in ways that are both measurable and felt.

Composition and the Mineral Dimension

The mineral infusions in the Atlantis Gong's construction contribute to a sound that carries a particular density and depth. Minerals have their own resonant frequencies wherein the crystalline structures of stones and compounds vibrate at characteristic rates when stimulated, and when these are incorporated into a bronze instrument, they influence how the metal initiates, sustains, and releases vibration. The result is a gong whose overtone series is richer and more complex than a standard bronze instrument of comparable size, with frequencies that seem to arise from unexpected depths in the acoustic spectrum.

Participants frequently describe the sound of the Atlantis Gong as ancient, oceanic, or primordial. There is a quality to it that seems to bypass ordinary conscious processing and speaks directly to something older and deeper in the body's experience. The name Atlantis, in this context, suggests not the literal lost civilization but the dimension of human experience that is submerged, pre-historical, and rooted in the body's most fundamental relationship to water, earth, and stone.

Healing Applications

The Atlantis Gong is particularly effective for deep trauma work, such as the kind of early or pre-verbal impact that is held in the body's most fundamental layers of organization. Its sound reaches below the level of narrative and concept, offering a vibrational environment in which those deep layers can begin to release without requiring the conscious mind to understand or explain what is happening.

It is also a powerful instrument for emotional depth work: grief, loss, longing, and the emotional tones that resist verbal expression. Its 36" size gives it substantial low-frequency presence, and its mineral-infused overtone series means that even its higher frequencies carry a weight and substance that supports rather than agitates.

In the context of the standing wave field, the Atlantis Gong contributes a particularly complex mid-to-low frequency signature that interacts with the other gongs in the room in ways that are difficult to predict and consistently surprising. It is the most acoustically unpredictable instrument on the wall, and that quality of productive unpredictability is part of its healing value.

38" Paiste Earth Gong, Note C#:

The Master Healer

The Earth Gong is the largest and lowest in vibration of the five instruments, and it is often referred to in sound healing circles as "the master healer." This is an acknowledgment of its unparalleled capacity to create conditions for deep, full-spectrum restoration by being tuned to the note C#, corresponding to the frequency of the Earth's own rotational period as calculated by Hans Cousto, creating a grounding in the frequency of Mother Nature herself. This gong is known to bring the body into resonance with the fundamental rhythm of the planet.

The note C occupies a significant position in many frameworks of healing sound. It is associated with the root (Muladhara) and with the energies of grounding, stability, and survival. In a broader sense, the Earth Gong at C# speaks to the body's most fundamental need. To feel held, to feel safe at a foundational level, and to feel that it belongs to something larger than its own separate experience.

Nature and Nurture

The Earth Gong's reputation as a healer of nature and nurture reflects its dual mechanism of action. On one hand, it speaks to the body's relationship with the natural world, inviting the deep, pre-civilization resonance with the rhythms of the Earth that is built into human biology. On the other hand, it addresses the relational dimension of healing of the quality of felt safety and care that is essential for the nervous system to truly let go.

In practical terms, the Earth Gong's low-frequency output, particularly its subsonic content below 20Hz, is felt throughout the body in a way that other gongs cannot replicate. Participants often describe a sensation of being enveloped or held, as though the sound has physical warmth and weight. This is in part a function of the 38" bronze surface area, which, when resonating, sets a substantial volume of air into motion. And in part a function of Paiste's alloy composition, at this size it produces a particularly rich and sustained fundamental tone.

Its Role in the Standing Wave

The Earth Gong serves as the acoustic foundation of the multi-instrument standing wave field. Its frequencies define the lower boundary of the room's sonic environment, providing a bass upon which all the other gongs' higher frequencies can rest and find support. The Earth Gong provides the solid foundation for which the complexity of the other gongs can expand.

Its interaction with the Platonic Year Gong, both being Paiste instruments of the same metallurgic family, produces a particularly coherent resonance in the shared frequency space between them. They oscillate together in a middle ground that is simultaneously spacious and stable, and that many participants find to be the most nourishing region of the acoustic field.

Friction mallet work on the Earth Gong requires patience and a slow, steady hand. After all, it takes longer to excite a gong of this mass into sustained vibration. When it arrives, however, the sustained tone is among the most profoundly physical experiences available in sound healing. A continuous, room-filling presence that makes the boundaries between the body and the acoustic space feel genuinely permeable.

A Closing Note

Each instrument on the gong wall has been selected for its capacity to serve the body's healing, and to contribute to the acoustic field in a specific and meaningful way. It asks of you to participate in the larger conversation of five frequencies meeting in shared space and within your body and biofield.

Whether you come to a single session or return across many years, the sound will meet you where you are, and it will be enough.

We look forward to sharing this space with you.
